Vixia HF r50 external mic not working

I specifically bought this camera because of the mic input. When I finally got a Sony ECM-CS3 lavalier mic I plugged it into the camera and no audio is picked up atl, even loud noises.I see the mic input meter come up on the screen but it stays at 0 except a few jumps if I jiggle the mic cord.  I tried the mic in my computer to test and it works just fine. Is there something else I have to do? Has anyone else used this mic with the camera?

I'm not sure whether or not this will help but have you tried manually adjusting the microphone level?  There are instructions for doing so on page 144 of the manual - http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/7/0300013657/02/hfr50-52-500-im2-n-en.pdf.
