HF G40 Backup Recording Format

Clearcomms

I have recently started working with HF G40 camcorders, and am very happy with the results.

I currently use dual recording - AVCHD on Card A, MP4 on Card B. The spec sheet indicates that the camcorder can record MP4 at 1920x1080 - but I can't find out how to set this on card B. where the best I can get is 1280x720.

Can I get card B to record MP4 on 1920x1080? And if so, how?

All suggestions will be appreciated and acknowledged.

Have a look at page 45 in the user manual, "Dual Recording and Relay Recording".

I never use AVCHD in my G40. MP4 at 50p 35Mbps gives me higher resolution originals and is better with edit software.

IamintheUK, thanks for a very helpful reply. I’d already looked at the manual, and it doesn’t say (but I think implies) that a backup mp4 recording can only be at a lower resolution.

it had never occurred to me to use MP4 as my main recording for better quality - I will test this out over the weekend, as it would save effort getting everything into Adobe Premiere CS6, which won’t import AVCHD sound and thus means extra work to get everything in.

So you may well have solved two problems for me in one short reply! You are a star.

Yes, the backup is at a lower resolution. This is an example of one of my videos shot in MP4 1080 50p at 35Mbps on the G40 and edited and graded in DaVinci Resolve. https://youtu.be/sQtocnlppx0
