Lens Hood for r80

Can anyone advise me about adding a lens hood to the r80?

Since the filter thread is 43mm have you tried searching for a 43mm lens hood?  If Canon does not offer one you could try looking at sites such as B&H Photo or Amazon or the online photo/video retailer of your choice.

Yes, that is what I was thinking I could do.  I was also curious if people typically put a lens hood on.  I am used to doing that with my DSLRs, but camcorders are new for me.

Yes, people do use lens hoods on camcorders.  It definitely helps protect against lens flare. Personally, I think it is a good idea to use one.

I assume also a UV filter would work, right?

Any 43mm filter should work and a UV filter is a good one to have.  I would make sure the lens hood will allow you to attach a filter.  A polarizing filter and neutral density filters also come in handy.
