Speedlite working sometimes

Hi, so i just got a yongnuo speedlite to use on an 80D but i have this problem where the speedlite icon blinks where the flash compensation icon goes and when i fire it sometimes syncs and sometimes it doesn't so i end up with some of the images well exposed and some to dark. Its on ETTL mode, no first courtain; i've cleaned the contacts in case it was that but to no success.

Also when i put it in manual mode it works just fine.

Why "no first curtain"? Isn't first-curtain synchronization the more common setting, at least when using a Canon flash? Have you tried it the other way?
