Speedlite 430EX II Left batteries in until they leaked!

BML
Contributor

I have a Canon EOS and a 300D Speedlight 430EX 111 which I left batteries the in until they leaked!

I cleaned the Speedlight battery holder but whatever I do I can find no life. Its years since I used it and can't remember if it shows life when not connected to a camera. Can I assume that I've killed it?

Hi BML do you have a budget in mind. Do you regularly shoot in low light conditions. If so certain newer speedlites won't be to provide an AF Assist Beam. The speedlites are all other wise compatible. Newer Canon speedlites such as the 90EX, EL-100, 270EX, 270EX II, 320EX, 430EX III/ III-RT won't be able to provide an AF Assist Beam. These speedlites mentioned above use "Intermittent Flashes" for AF Assist. This feature is used in the built in flash to provide an AF Assist Beam. In order for those flashes to provide AF Assist you'll need a camera released in 2007 onward. These 2007 and newer cameras have what is called the "speedlite control menu" to control flash settings from the camera body. This was the same time Canon introduced the "smart" hot shoe. Starting with the 430EX II and 580EX II. The camera body could control speedlite settings from the speedlite control menu. Speedlites released prior to the 430EX II and 580EX II Can not be controlled from the speedlite control menu on 2007 and newer cameras. The camera body will read "Speedlite is turned off or incompatible speedlite is attached".

Hi BML, the speedlite doesn't have to be mounted to the camera. For the speedlite to power up. When was this speedlite purchased also how new is it.

I think that I purchased it maybe 20 years ago. If that is way out then when they were first sold.

Is it the original 430EX not the 430EX III-RT. The 430EX III-RT was released in 2015. The original 430EX was released in 2005.

Canon store has no stock on anything but some transmitters.

B&H has stock.  It looks like Canon is working on new flashes since all of the current 600 series are discontinued now.

Isn't the replacement to the 600EX II-RT the EL-1.

Hi Demitrius,

I suppose it is.  I'm not sure why there isn't anything in between the 430 and EL-1

EL-100 $199 > 430EX-III RT $299 <?> EL-1 $1,000

Canon had the 430EX II, 580EX II, 600EX (non RT Version), 600EX-RT and the 470EX-AI as refurbished units available too. But their no longer on the online store as refurbished units.

Fingers moving faster than my brain meant I gave the wrong name which is. "Speedlite 430EX 11"

My Canon EOS 300D appears to still be working so what Flash should I look for?
