I have a Canon Speedlite 270EX flash. Will it work with the Canon R50 camera coupled with the Multi-Function Shoe Adapter AD-E1?

Yes with the AD-E1 adapter you can use the old 270EX with your EOS R50.

However I cannot recall if the 270EX supports the flash menu functions that your EOS R50 provides. If it does not then you will need to make changes to the 270EX settings with the buttons on the flash itself.

The 270EX was the first entry level speedlite to support the in camera flash menu. The older 220EX did not support it as it was released in 1996. The 270EX only can be controlled from the camera menu. There aren’t on flash controls other than the power switch.

Thanks for helping out with the specifics, I couldn't recall that specific model's capabilities.

The newer entry level flashes are dependent on the camera menu to control settings. Using an older camera you cannot change the speedlite’s settings. There’s no way to do so on the speedlite itself. This is a different incompatibility that older speedlites such as the 220EX has. It has just a power switch and HSS/ FP Flash switch. 2nd Curtain Sync, FEC & AF Assist Beam firing is controlled from the camera body. Older cameras can’t fire an Intermittent AF Assist Beam. This requires updated hardware in the camera body. Cameras which support the in camera flash menu already have the updated hardware. Thus for older cameras I recommend an older speedlite such as the 430EX II. Which will work on both pre-2007 DSLRs and DSLRs with in camera flash menu support. This is because there is an LCD screen to make changes directly on the speedlite.

I got the Canon AD-E1 adapter for my Canon R50 and my Canon 270EX works with the adapter. Thank you for your help. Trying it out and learning to use it now
