Hi there,
I own a Canon M3 and a Speedlite 220EX flash ... are those compatible?

Your EOS M3 has a standard hotshoe on the top, and the Speedlite 220EX will fit that and give you automatic flash exposure controlled by the camera. The key is that the Speedlite 220EX has more power than the pop-up flash on your camera.

So, sliding it on the hot shoe it should flash in dark situations without changing any settings in the camera?

Yes it should fire. Slide the speedlite into the hot shoe then turn it on. Then turn on the camera and the flash will fire.

Will give it a go. Thanks.

Make sure the red lamp next to the word "E-TTL" is lit up. EOS Film cameras from 1995- onward and all EOS DSLR and Mirrorless cameras support E-TTL. If the red lamp is NOT lit up the speedlite reverts to off the film TTL. Which is Incompatible with digital cameras. This will cause gross overexposure. High Speed Sync/ FP flash is set on the speedlite. Rear Curtain sync is set in the speedlite control menu. Note Rear Curtain sync and HSS CANNOT be set in Full Auto. M, Av, Tv & P modes support those settings along with Flash Exposure Compensation (FEC).

Yes the 220EX speedlite is compatible with your camera as @p4pictures pointed out. Also note that the in camera flash menu IS NOT compatible with your speedlite. You have partial compatability to set rear curtain sync & Flash Exposure Compensation. Since those settings can't be sent on the speedlite.
