We have lots of squirrels in our backyard. That is a defensive position used when they feel threatened. They will climb on a wood fence and flatten their body as it is in the open. BTW, cute photo.

These little guys live all over my uni’s-campus there are tons of them and honestly they’re probably the friendliest squirrels you’ll ever meet. It was the first really nice day of the year, and I caught this one stretched out like this. I looked it up and apparently squirrels do this sometimes as a defense mechanism, but they also do it when they’re trying to cool down. There’s even a name for it… splooting!

 

I watched he and his friends running around chasing each-other for a while so personally, I think this little guy was just enjoying the sunshine and trying to beat the heat! 😄
