Acorn Woodpeckers R5 Mark II & RF200-800mm F6.3-9 IS USM
On a sunlit branch above the forest floor, sat a woodpecker couple who could never ignore a perfectly good tree with bark ripe for thwacking; because romance, for them, meant synchronized whacking. He puffed his chest like a feathery knight, declaring, "My love, I'll defend our granary tonight." She rolled her eyes, tapping twice with flair, as if to say, "Relax, babe''.. It's literally a spare." They danced on the branch with chaotic precision, a tap tap duet fueled by mutual derision. He bragged, "I stored acorns in record time!" She replied, "Congrats dear... I hid mine in a straight line." Together they ruled that oak like a throne, guarding acorn treasures they definitely didn't own. And every squirrel who dared to glance was met with a furious woodpecker war-dance. Yet, when sunset hit and the forest turned gold, they nestled together, sweet, silly and bold. Two tiny tyrants of tapping and chatter proving love is loud, weird, and full of clatter.

Where is this woodpecker found? Wife and I find it most interesting. We have several bird feeders, bird houses and hummingbird feeders around our property. A robin has built a nest in the beams of our deck; may be the same bird from last year.

Hi John, 👋
Acorn woodpeckers are found across Central America, extending north into the western United States and south into parts of Colombia. I'm in Northern California, South of San Francisco and North of San Jose CA, and took their pics in a local Ranch Preserve.
Acorn woodpeckers typically inhabit:
These habitats are crucial for their survival, as they rely heavily on oak trees for food and nestin sites.

Clan of the Thousand Oaks
In the high boughs of California’s oaks lives a tribe unlike any other bird.
Not a flock.
Not a pair.
A guild, a council, a family empire.
They do not live — they organize.
- Multiple males share one queen.
- Multiple queens share one throne.
- All siblings raise all chicks.
- Every bird is both warrior and accountant.
- Their granary trees hold tens of thousands of acorns — each one hammered in with the fury of a tiny master carpenter.
This is not a family.
This is a feathered syndicate.
