This image was created at La Minga Ecolodge near Cali in Valle del Cauca, Colombia, within the humid cloud forests of the Andean foothills. The subject is the Orange-bellied Euphonia (Euphonia xanthogaster), a small but visually striking songbird whose coloration stands out even in dense tropical vegetation. In this frame, the bird is perched calmly on a pale branch, its compact posture allowing the eye to move cleanly from the deep blue upperparts to the saturated yellow belly. The dark head provides a natural visual anchor, while the background dissolves into soft green layers that reflect the surrounding forest.

I photographed this scene using a Canon EOS R5 paired with the RF 800mm F11 IS STM lens. The long focal length allowed me to maintain distance while still achieving strong subject presence, an important consideration when working with small forest birds. The fixed f/11 aperture required careful exposure management in the low-light conditions typical of cloud forest environments. I waited for evenly diffused light filtering through the canopy, which helped preserve feather detail and accurate color without introducing harsh contrast.

Shutter speed was selected to account for subtle movement from both the bird and surrounding foliage, while ISO was adjusted to balance exposure without sacrificing detail. The compression created by the 800mm focal length simplified the background, allowing the euphonia to separate naturally from its surroundings without relying on excessive blur. The resulting image feels grounded in place, maintaining a sense of depth and atmosphere rather than isolating the subject unnaturally.

Orange-bellied Euphonias are primarily fruit-eaters and play an important role in seed dispersal within these forests. Photographing this species in an intact habitat underscores the value of conservation-focused destinations like La Minga, where wildlife, forest structure, and responsible travel coexist. This image reflects my broader photographic approach, prioritizing patience, field awareness, and respect for natural behavior over intervention or staged composition.
