Speckled Shadow
A mottled brown upon the branch. White-spotted wings in the evening's launch. No velvet cap of black yet worn, Just speckled feathers, amber-torn. With ruby-red eyes that pierce the gloam, And quiet banks that you call home. A stocky guard of the water's edge, Waiting silent within the sedge.
