EOS 7d focus issue.

Here is a photo (macro) with a eos 7d w/100mm 1:2.8 L IS USM MACRO LENS. I used it on (Automatic Setting). Also happens on other settings. Why is this not focused all around the middle maple seed ? What would cause it to be focused in an angle and not clear over all?

When you focus on a subject that is close to the camera, the depth of field is very limited. From your image I see that you / your camera selected 1/45, f/2.8 ISO 100. If the AF point is aimed at the central part of the seed - centre of the frame - then it is highly likely that the lower parts of the seed closer to the camera will be out of focus, as will the seed part at the top.

To increase the depth of field and the amount of the seed that is sharp select Av mode on the camera mode dial, set the aperture value to f/11 and switch to auto ISO. This will allow the camera to use a suitable shutter speed for the 100mm lens, as 1/45 is a little slow unless the camera is on a tripod.

When you use manual you need to make sure that the ISO, shutter speed and aperture are suitable for the amount of light you have. You can’t just select the values you want and them be suitable for a correct exposure. Say you choose 1/250th f/8 and ISO 100 and shoot in a typical house then the result will be a black frame as it is under espoused.

Thank you so much Brian,  I will try this. I also tried M setting so I can put in my own iso,f and ect. I took the same shot of this seed and the screen was Black after the shot in the preview screen. I'm guessing the settings were wrong?

Thank you so much! That makes total sense.
