The Orange-bellied Euphonia, scientifically known as Euphonia xanthogaster, is a remarkable example of the vibrant biodiversity found in the Andean cloud forests. I had the privilege of photographing this species at La Minga Ecolodge, located near Cali, Colombia. This serene setting provided an ideal backdrop for capturing the beauty and essence of this stunning bird.

The photograph shows the euphonia perched gracefully on a slender branch, its brilliant orange belly contrasting with its deep blue-violet back and golden-yellow crown. The soft, diffused light filtering through the dense forest canopy highlighted the intricate feather details and vibrant colors of the bird. The blurred green background created a natural frame, emphasizing the subject while maintaining the serene ambiance of its environment.

To achieve this image, I used the Canon R5 paired with the RF 100-500mm lens at its full focal length of 500mm. The camera settings included a shutter speed of 1/500 second to freeze the bird’s subtle movements and an ISO of 800 to balance the low-light conditions of the forest. These technical choices were critical in preserving the rich tones and sharp details of the bird’s plumage while maintaining the natural feel of the habitat.

The experience of photographing the Orange-bellied Euphonia was enriched by the guidance of Asherita Viajera, a knowledgeable Colombian birding guide. Her expertise allowed me to better understand the behavior of this species and appreciate the interconnectedness of the ecosystem it inhabits. This image not only celebrates the euphonia’s beauty but also serves as a reminder of the importance of conserving the delicate environments of the Andean cloud forests.
