Hello,
I had reassurances that my new scanner would have proper TWAIN drivers to work with my new iMac running MacOS12. Nothing happens when I plug the printer in and I've downloaded several times the driver you have on your support page. What am I doing wrong?

Hi,
If the scanner was connected before you drivers were installed, please remove the drivers/software, disconnect the scanner and restart your Mac.
Once that is done, reinstall the driver and CaptureOnTouch scanning program first and then reconnect the usb cable and open CaptureOnTouch and try to scan.
If the issue persists, it is recommended that you call our Enterprise & Desktop Solutions Divisions at 1-800-423-2366 Monday-Friday 9:00 am to 8:00 pm ET, excluding holidays.

I tried this process on a 2018 MacBook Pro running Ventura (OS 13), and now running Sequoia (OS 15). I see that in both cases the scanner doesn't appear under System Preferences > Printers and Scanners; my Canon G6000 series all-in-one scanner / printer appears, as does my Epson v370 scanner; with Sequoia / OS 15 the installation process runs ok but fails to actually install the software, but it installed ok on OS 13. The same is true whichever USB-c to A adaptor I use
On my previous MacBook Pro, a 2011 model running Sierra (OS 10.12) which in the end stopped working, the scanner worked perfectly with no problems.

SOLVED! You need to download the drivers for the non-receipt version of the R40
The file you download will end in .pkg NOT .dmg. The .dmg version corrupts and ImageCapture won't open but the .pkg version from this link works.
Works: https://www.usa.canon.com/support/p/imageformula-r40-office-document-scanner
DOESN'T WORK: https://soft.canon-elec.co.jp/ims/r40/en/
