C70 Remote jack & commercially available controller -- how?

The C70 manual says that you can plug a "commercially available controller" into the remote A jack, as an alternative to the RC-V100.  (Manual page 11, 110, 194.)

Given that the RC-V100 costs £2,780, I'm quite interested in using the "commercially available controller" option.  But it doesn't seem to work.  I have 2 remote controllers that fit the 2.5mm jack, but neither of them does anything.  And yes, I have set the "Remote Term." mode to "standard" in the menus.

So, has anyone had any luck with this?  Any ideas?  Obviously I can use Browser Remote, but this seems like a handy alternative, if it can work.

Hi AtticusLake,

Through Canon support we only have information on Canon products and can only recommend Canon products. Due to that the trouble shooting we can do for non-Canon remotes is more limited. To trouble shoot the remotes themselves we would recommend contacting the maker of the remotes.

On the camera the main thing is having Remote Term. set to Standard as you mentioned. The camera wouldn't be able to recognize non-Canon remotes otherwise. The other thing would be to double check that the remote jack is pushed in all the way so it is flush with the side of the camera, and is flush with the port on the remote. Sometimes if the jack is even a small amount out of the port it can cause communication issues.
