C70 - Optical Image Stabilization Not Working

I have a brand new C70 with 1.0.8.1(latest) firmware.  When I tried to enable "Lens Optical IS" in the menu, the option is greyed out and the message "This function is not compatible with the current lens".  This is when I attach any of my IS capable Canon Lenses with the latest firmware.

RF24-70 F2.8

RF 14-35 F4

RF 70-200 F2.8

EF 24-105 F4 with the 0.71x mount adaptor.

AF works with all these cameras and the focal length/aperture value are communicated correctly to the camera.  Am I missing something or do I have a defective camera?  Thanks!

Based on the manual for the EOS C70, it appears that this particular setting only applies when using RF-S lenses. This is directly from the manual.

Not according to Canon's own videos below.  It just says any IS capable RF and EF lenses via mount adaptor.  Would appreciate if anyone here with a C70 can verify this on their camera if they have an IS enabled lens.

I no longer have my C70, but do check out the manual (what John posted earlier).  An RF-S lens would just cover the Super 35 sensor (approx APS-C), so it's probably a specific setting for those lenses.

I only had the RF 24-70mm f/2.8L with the C70 and I always just used IS in the lens itself.

When stability is critical, a tripod or stabilzation device (gimbal, steadycam, etc.) is best.

So I assume Optical IS worked for you?  My C70 says "This function is not compatible with the current lens" for all my RF and EF lenses with IS.  This is still the case after I reset the camera to factory default.  I did not test this feature before upgrading to firmware 1.0.8.1.  The camera shipped with 1.0.7.

I reviewed the product manual for the C70 and my R5 C which is essentially the same except I have a full size sensor. No IBIS in either camera. I looked further into this.

Lens Optical IS works with a full frame lens on a APS-C camera (C70) when the IS switch on the lens is turned on.  As noted in subsequent posts, the "✋" icon on the LCD screen with the switch on or off.  The icon changes color indicating on/off which makes sense.  If an APS-C lens is used and it doesn't have a IS switch, IS is enabled in the camera's menu.       

**Digital IS (for comparison) 

Digital IS uses software to crop the image projected by an APS-C lens to a smaller APS-C sensor. Even when cropped, the full image projected to the sensor is captured. This is not possible using a full frame lens on a APS-C sensor since the image projected to the sensor has a larger image circle. There is no way to crop this image as you will lose a portion of the image projecting to the sensor.

full frame lenses with IS works just fine on crop sensors.  It has been like that when the EF 24-105 F4 IS first came out and works on all cropped sensor DSLRs.  

I just spoke to Canon support and basically the message in the camera is misleading.  Optical IS works as long as the IS switch is physically turned on on the lens.  RF-S lenses with IS does not have a physical switch, that's why it needs to be toggled from the camera menu.

thanks for updating this -- this makes sense to me.  I seem to recall reading somewhere that the menu setting is just for lenses without the physical switch.

In any case I just tested this with my C70 with the 24-70 f/2.8 RF full-frame lens, and it's noticeable that switching on IS on the lens produces a very clear stabilisation.  Digital IS was definitely turned OFF.

This is what I did as well with my C70 and the 24-70 f/2.8L.  Set IS to ON on the lens, but also never used Digital IS.

Optical and Digital IS are different.

Optical IS is IBIS (at the sensor if equipped) and the lenses internal elements moving to compensate for movement and shake.

**Some cameras will utilize the edges of a full frame sensor when used in conjunction with a APS-C lens (Optical IS) but its not as common and you'd have to ask Canon if any of its body's supported this.  I do not know this answer.  

Digital IS is software. See my reply above.

I don't have any APC-S any longer, but am quite sure that I have never been able to activate Lens Optical IS with any of my RF (full frame lenses) with any of the FW's on my R5 C.  Hope it helps.
