Hi all.
Newby here (old darkroom guy)
This is way too damned complicated (compared to darkroom printing). Mac Studio, Photoshop (current version), imagePROGRAF 310. All I want to do is print B&W, and sometimes color, photos onto Hahnemuhle FineArt Baryta (B&W) and onto a smooth matte paper for the color images. I have the profile for FABaryta. There are way too many places the select settings when printing as far as I am concerned.
I am not a computer newby, I am a graphic designer for over 30 years, and a photographer for over 45... just new to this high quality inkjet printing. So I need to know the following (please indulge me):
1. Convert to Profile in Photoshop - Yes or No? (I've heard yes)
2. Where do I print from, Photoshop or some other Canon software? (I prefer Photoshop)
Photoshop or printer controls color? I've heard Photoshop.
3. Where do I make the settings? It seems to me that I have to select the profile in Photoshop (which is already in the PSD file?) AND then click on Printer Settings and have to make more choices (like any other office printer). Why isn't there ONE place to do all of this? And can I save these settings so I don't have to rely on my aging memory?
4. Do I ignore everything on the tiny LCD panel on the printer when printing? (paper type, etc).
5. How do I (or can it be done, and if so how) do I get MY papers (Hahnemuhle etc) to show up in that list (LCD panel and in the Print Settings dialogue box in Photoshop? If not, do I choose Baryta for HFABaryta? And what for any other non-Canon papers?
6. I have this set up for Airprint, not because I want to... I prefer ethernet, but I cannot get that to work. Cables are good, tested them. I can see the IP address but the Canon software will not connect via Ethernet. Big suck on that.
7. I've heard that I should NOT be using the Airprint driver, and should be using something called IJ??? Is that correct, and if so, where do I get that? I have to tell you, setting the connectivity settings on this printer was a pain in the you know what. Not very straight-forward, bouncing out to browser pages, etc instead of staying in ONE setup application environment. If I have to uninstall the printer I am OK with that, just want to know what the right, pro way to re-install it is. As far as I am concerned, Canon's SW... big suck again.
8. Which paper feeds are which? What is the tiny one in the back? And the big one on top? And which should I use? And why, does it always tell me there's no paper? I know, I'm choosing the wrong one... why aren't they labeled better for idiots like me? Lack of a printed manual here... big suck. I hate having to jump back over to my Mac to go online to see what something is supposed to look like. Would be nice to have a manual, even a PDF that I could print out what I need and have it handy.
Sorry for all the questions... just looking for the best way to get consistent prints. Thanks in advance.
