imageCLASS MF462dw that keeps resetting to fax driver

My Canon all in one keeps resetting to the fax driver.  I can not get it to set to the printer driver.  So every time I print, I have to go click to make the printer driver show u.  I have tried everything.  Also , the printer goes to sleep, and won't work, so I have to turn it off and on again to make it work.  this usually happens when I am trying to scan.  I REALLY AM NOT HAPPY WITH THIS PIECE OF JUNK!  My Brother all in ones worked great for 20 years, and I really wish I had bought another one instead of this thing that took almost a week to get it to run, and almost eveyr day there is an issue.  Is it just me, or does eveyrone have problems with this?  Should I just give up and buy something better?

I have two lasers and both are problem free.  Whatever is happening, I doubt it's the printer. 

I'm happy to help you work through your issues one at a time.

Let's start with some basic information.

What OS version and build are you using the printer with?

How is the printer connected and to what?

I am running Windows 11 Pro.  the printer is hooked into my computer by a USB type A, and hiiked into the printer by a USB type B.  I installed the standard MF462dw driver by the CDRom that came with the printer.  It includes: Generic Plus UFRII, Generic Plus PCL6, Generic PlusPS3, Generic Fax, and Scangear.  I don't need the fax at all,; as I have a separate fax.  I have tried installing the drivers by the CDRom and by downloading them from the website multiple times.  The CDRom installed all of those drivers. Nothing ever comes up where I could specify which driver I wanted to use-it just automatically picks the fax one. And I seem to have no ability to delete the fax driver, either. 

Thanks for responding.  Here's what I recommend.

Open the printers and scanners applet under settings.  Remove all instances of the printer.  Printer, fax, scanner, etc.

Disconnect the USB cable from your system.

Now open the Control Panel > Programs and Features.  Uninstall all software and drivers related to the printer.  

Important, restart your system.

You only need two drivers to print and scan.

Note.  Run the first installer.  Do not connect the printer until you are prompted to do so.  

Then run the second installer.  You can throw that CD you have away. It's outdated.  It was produced when the printer was manufactured and could be a year or more old.  If you need to install the printer on another system, visit the link for the support portal I posted previously.  It has the lasted drivers and software available for your device. 

You should now be able to print and scan.

Well, that worked great up until a point.  I now have one file stuck in the print spooler that I have spent two hours trying to get out unsucessfully.  This also caused a cascade of 25 pick an apps to decend on my computer as well.  I STILL HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO GET THE PRINTER TO WORK, AND NOW IT DOES NOT WORK AT ALL!  As a lawyer, this is super critical and very, very bad.  I have spent over 8 hours on this stupid Canon, and I will NEVER, EVER BUY ONE AGAIN! I got most all the software uninstalled, and the printer says there is no driver there, but it shows up under settings.  I managed to get all but one file out of the print spooler, but the print spooler says that file is open, and nothing I do closes it. I had to stop and spend an hour on the pick an app mess on my computer.  I was planning to do actual work, but can't as now I can't even scan or print documents. At least before I tried to fix it, I had a workaround. But I do appreciate your help. I guess serve me right for buying an older model, but I just didn't need a giant copier as I am the entire office. Maybe i would have been better off just buying a separate printer and a separate scanner. I think it says it is a SPL file if that makes any difference.

The printer's not that old 😄.  It's definitely supported under Windows 11. I have 2 MF's which are almost identical except they are color units 

How to get documents deleted that are stuck in the print queue.  Click on the start button and type "services.msc" (no quotes).  Press enter.  The services applet will open.  Scroll down to P's until you see the print spooler service.  Right click on the line item and select stop from the context menu.  Now right click on it again and click start.  That should take care of any documents stuck in your print queue.  😉

One thing I've not experienced is to "pick an app".

Is your Windows 11 running in S mode?  Let's find out.  

Click on the start button, type "winver" without quotes and press enter, tell me what the dialogue says that displays.  It's going to tell you what version and build of Windows you're running.  Does it say S mode?

The printer is solid. I promise you. There is something that we haven't identified with your system yet.  The install typically takes about 8 minutes start to finish.  Without extras picking an app, etc.  I used HP printers for years before switching to Canon and I'm so happy I did.  The Canon software and operation is so much better.

Unfortunately I tried that and it did not work. Maybe I should try reinstalling the driver again and then trying it? I did fix the pick app thing, so that's a plus. I truly appreciate your help. And you are responding quickly. I won't be able to get to this for awhile as I have to go to court and then to the jail.

The printer by some miracle started printing again, but obviously not scanning.  Work was crazy, so I just led it ride until I had time to get back to you.  I have windows 11 Pro Version 24H2. No S.

When you open the MF Scan Utility and initiate a scan what happens?  Are there any error messages?  There is a small box in the upper right hand corner  of the utility.  Is there more that one printer identified in the drop down?
