ScanGear MF - Cannot communicate with the Scanner

JohnBay

I have the MF-455DW printer/scanner. I have installed the drivers and the MF Scan Utility and am connected via WIFI. The printer works fine, however, when scanning either from the printer or from the Scan Utility, I get the error box: ScanGear MF: Cannot communicate with the scanner. The cable may be disconnected, or the scanner may be turned off. Check the scanner status and try again. Scanner driver will be terminated. Note that I get the same error on the computer in either case - initiating from the computer or the printer.

Can anyone please provide some help?

Oh, and I was just "awarded" a new badge for my 5th "Like". I guess I am being rewarded for NOT HAVING the solution but having a scanner that doesn't work as advertised.

Greetings,

A workaround for this issue MF Scan Utility Communication Failure when running windows 11 24H2 was posted by user Dale1973.  I tested the solution in my own environment and it worked.

It was originally posted in the Microsoft  Community and others there also confirmed it as working.  It involves disabling the entry or entries for the printer under Imaging Devices in Device Manager, then manually forcing an update on those devices using right-click, then restarting.

Several users here have also responded with a positive outcome.

a link to that post would be nice

Hi

I purchased a MF751CDW yesterday and had the exact same problem. It replaced a MF451 which was working perfectly fine for two years. The solution was to download and run the total driver package from 2023 that is 286.85 MB. It is listed as [Windows 64bit] MF753Cdw/ MF751Cdw MFDrivers (Generic Plus UFR II / Generic FAX / ScanGear). Run that program and allow it to do the installation. You can still download the updated driver on top of that but the 2025 (v300 or 312) driver-only download doesn't have the installation feature. Don't ask me what the difference is.

I checked for your MF 455, and it looks like that total driver installation package is from 4.26.22 at 271.61 MB. It is called [Windows 64bit] MF455dw MFDrivers (Generic Plus UFR II / Generic Plus PCL6 / Generic Plus PS3 / Generic FAX / ScanGear). You can filter the download type at the top by drivers. I would say to try to download and run that. You can remove the prior installation of the printer if you want to before so it doesn't make a copy.

I tried the Dale 1973 method mentioned and it didn't work.

Good luck.

Thanks User2. I appreciate the extra time you spent looking for a solution for me. However, I just uninstalled the device and reinstalled it as you suggested with no luck.

Thanks again.

John.

Same problem, on a MF733cdw (which worked fine recently). I went to https://www.usa.canon.com/support and downloaded all the drivers and utilities for my model. That fixed the problem.
