MF Scan Utility Cannot Communicate with scanner MF644CDW

I have 2 computers on my network that have an error when trying to scan to my MF644CDW Printer/scanner.

It says "Cannot communicate with the scanner. The cable may be disconnected, or the scanner may be turned off. Check the scanner statue and try again. Scanner driver will be terminated." 

I can print to the printer and the scanner selector software sees the printer/scanner and when I install the MF Scan utility software it sees the scanner. It works fine from other computers on my network, but not 2 of them. All windows 11 computers. I have tried everything I can think of like disabling the firewall and security settings. What could be causing this and how can I fix it?

Canon has great printer. I think their developer don't spend time in putting in working to developed a good printer driver. All the drivers for their printer is very bad, they will put out bad driver and pretend like they don't know what is going on. 

 

Once I updated my window 11 pc, now I got the printer ImageClasss MF462dw printing automatically 2 pages. Why should it be like that Canon? I didn't experience this issue with my HP or Epson Printers. 

Someone from Canon will come here saying to uninstalled and reinstalled the driver, why should this be the fix? Do I have to do this every time I have to update my window 11 PC? 

This's really bad for business. You guys are providing service and I believe it should be well prepared for the customers. No one buy Canon printer to go through Hardship. 

CANON Please hired some good developer to produce good printer drivers. 

I have been frustrated by this issue also. I bought a new desktop machine and it immediately updated and installed Win11 24H2 on it. I then installed my Canon software for my printer MF750C and the MF Scan Utility would fail with the message mentioned many times in this thread.

I have installed all the latest updates and including the one Microsoft released 12/10/2024, KB5048667, but none of that made the scanner software work.

Now today I reinstalled just the drivers for the MF750C under the Imaging devices in Device Manager, and it started working, and has kept working as I think I have tested after rebooting at least 10 times today.

So bring up Device Manager, (right click on the Start Menu), expand Imaging devices, then right click your device, mine says Canon MF750C Series, (2 times). Now this part is important as I checked it twice and if you don't Disable the device first it doesn't seem to work right. So right click on the device and click Disable Device. My MF750C is listed twice here in Imaging devices, so be sure to Disable Device for both of them. Then right click on it again and select Browse my computer for drivers, then select Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer. Your printer/scanner should be in the list, make sure it is selected, then click Next.

Mine then came back and said Windows has successfully updated your drivers. Make sure you do this for BOTH of the devices listed there, at least if it lists two of them. Windows does say it updated the device driver. I'm not sure what it did for sure but it did something.

 

It doesn't say you have to, but I then rebooted my machine before I tried the software, but then the MF Scan Utility works! It has kept working for 2 days now, and after many reboots!

I don't know if this will work for everyone but so far it has worked for me. I have no ideas what made it work today.

Microsoft and Canon, (and apparently HP and Brother), need to talk and get this resolved for people!

This appears to have resolved the issue with my MF455dw.  I just updated the driver via device manager and now I can scan directly from the printer, where before I had to use the windows scan utility on my pc. Thanks Dale_1973!

I just followed these steps for my mf634cdw and it fixed it. I also only have one device for my printer under Imaging Devices. I disabled, reinstalled from the local driver, and rebooted, and no more error.

So annoying that it doesn't work correctly with the normal install process, but so glad there's a workaround. No more having to scan documents on a different computer and transfer them to the new one..

I am not seeing this working for me.   Perhaps I am missing a step in the process.  I have installed the latest Canon software today (Master setup download).   I followed this post with seeing two entries for my MF753c printer in Device Manager under Imaging Devices.  Right click on printer, select disable.  Repeat for 2nd printer entry.  Then double click on Printer (1st), Select Driver tab on window.  I see the driver provider is Microsoft, Date:  6/21/20026, etc.   I select Update Driver button, select Browse for drivers on Computer.  I changed the search criteria to C:\ and check the box "include subfolders", then select Next button.  It begins a search (takes about 1 min).  Then I get a message "The best drivers for your device are already installed", which is listed as "Microsoft eSCL Class Driver".   I went ahead and selected Close button.  Repeated process on 2nd listed Canon device (note driver listed for this entry was a Canon driver.  Re enabled bot devices in the Device Manager, tried to scan from printer to selecting the computer (Win11 24H2 (OS Build 26120.2705).  Result is same pop up error on computer.   So this fix is not working for me....

Canon MF650C Series and Canon MF750C Series but may work for other Canon ImageClass printers

After uninstalling, rebooting and reinstalling Canon’s mastersetupv110 (install the appropriate mastersetupXXXX.exe for your printer) for the imageClass656cdw and following Dale_1973 instructions I was able to use Canon’s MF Scan Utility. 

These are instructions originally submitted by Dale_1973. I merely put them into a step-by-step format. If you notice any errors please let me know. 

I did not install: winmfscanutilityv12102 (because its included in mastersetupv110)

or MF650CMFDriverV720W64

These are instructions for one listing of a Canon series printer under Imaging Devices in Device Manager. But they apply to all duplicates if you have more than one. For example, if you see several duplicate entries:

Canon MF650C Series

Canon MF650C Series

Canon MF650C Series

Etc.

After installing the above: mastersetupv110 do the following:

  1. Goto Device Manager
    1. Expand Imaging Devices
    2. Right click on the Canon MF650C Series and select “Disable  Device”. If your Canon is listed more than once, disable each one.
  2. After you have disabled the Canon device right click on it again and select “Update Driver”
  3. Click Browse My computer for drivers.
  4. Click Next
  5. Click Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer
  6. Your printer/scanner should be in the list, make sure it is selected, then click Next.
  7. A message should appear, Windows has successfully updated your drivers
  8. Do this for each duplicate Canon device listed under Imaging Devices.
  9. Exit the Device Manager and (Required) reboot your computer.
  10. The Canon MF Scan Utility should now be functional.

This worked for me. Using a MG650C. It does require a reboot - I tried without and still got the error message. Thanks!

This did not work for me.

Because it's not really a solution. It did not work for me either. 

While some maybe happy others aren't. Cannon just needs to switch to the way Microsoft has chosen to go and make a new driver. But, they won't because it means forcing people to buy more products which means more revenue.
