Duplex scanning broken for MF455dw after upgrade to Windows 11

This is the exact same problem as described in this post, but for the ImageClass MF455dw laser printer printer. I can do duplex scanning directly to a SMB share (PDF or JPG) and with ScanGear when explicitly setting the 2-sided ADF option (but only JPG, one for each side of each page). When I go to scan settings for when I use the "Computer" option on the printer, the box for duplex scanning is missing.

I've tried the workaround by scanning with ScanGear with this workaround, which does not fix the missing checkbox problem.

W004dsl,

I appreciate you starting your own topic as I requested 🙂.  Let me grab a cup of coffee and we'll get started.

Good Morning,

"Exact same issue". This is unclear.  While I gave a very detailed response, the OP never replied.

Please feel free to correct me or provide more detail if I get anything wrong.

The feature worked prior to you upgrading to 24H2.  Also, can you please tell me how the printer is connected and to what?  Wireless, USB, Etc.  As I'm sure you are aware, peripherals do not always cleanly migrate across a feature release or OS upgrade.  Normally the feature release scenario goes off without a hitch but Microsoft made some sweeping changes in 24H2 that broke eSCL scanning functionality.  The devices affected were primarily USB, but I've seen the behavior on wired and wireless devices too.  KB5048667 was released and seemed to resolve it for some but not all.

So that I'm not reposting unnecessarily can you please review the images in the other thread and tell me what you see in your environment.

Do you have more than one instance of the printer in the drop-down menu ( upper right hand corner of the MF scan utility)?

Do you have more than one instance of the device under +Imaging Devices in Device Manager?

Do you have version v1.21.0.2 of the MF scan utility installed?  x.0.1 was released about 10 months before x.0.2.  It was subsequently removed.  v1.21.0.0 is still present under W7/8/8.1.  Not implying that you should try to use it just providing a timeline.

I used v1.21.0.1 when I installed my MF644Cdw. After upgrade to 24H2 on one machine I lost scanning functionality all together.  The MF scan utility wouldn't even open.

To resolve, I removed the printer from the system (Printers Applet), uninstalled all Canon software (important restarted) then reinstalled the printer as an IP printer using the latest available drivers.  This restored scanning functionality.  The MF scan utility would open and the checkbox for single pass duplex scanning for the ADF was present.  In all of my scenarios it always had been.

In your case I think there's going to be a duplicate instance present. I'm not advocating or recommending that you do a clean install of Windows.  I agree that would be absolutely ridiculous and only a last-ditch effort way down the line.  I am a strong advocate for system restore and regular backups.  Time machine on my MACs.  Obviously you don't want to go back to a previous feature release.  I just do it to keep options open.  Often times we don't know what Microsoft and Apple have up their sleeve.

One thing I forgot to add, if the printer is going to be connected using USB it should not be connected to the system until prompted by the installer to do so.

There is only 1 instance in the dropdown. I'm a software engineer and have tried everything I know to resolve it. I tried uninstalling the driver (including in the device manager when it was hidden), restarting & reinstalling the latest drivers, and the guidance on the links I provided.

In my initial message I said, "I can do duplex scanning directly to a SMB share (PDF or JPG)". That implies network connectivity instead of USB connection. I've attached screenshots that will hopefully be useful in identifying a resolution.

Do you have an update by any chance?

Greetings,

Thanks for all the info.  Very helpful. I agree, you've certainly been thorough.

I reviewed my environments in W10 and W11.  Also scoured the remote UI, MF Scan Utility and print driver for possible cause.  Its clear this is a software issue in your environment.

Was your upgrade W10 > W11 or just a feature release update?

My next suggestion would be Canon Support.  Although I would expect removing the device uninstalling, restarting and reinstalling would resolve and restore the missing box.  If they cannot help, you are likely at the last step of reinstalling to correct whatever problem exists.  I suspect an install to a different system would work normally.  I also don't think trying to dig through systems folders or the registry is worth your while.

To get support, start by registering the printer in your MyCanon Acct.  The printer has a 3 yr warranty.

It worked just fine with last year's version of Windows 11, and after a forced update to the release from this year, it stopped working.
