computer does not recognize powershot a590 is

When I plug the camera to my laptop with windows 8.1 with the usb cable it came with the computer does not recognize the device. When I hit device trouble shooter same thing. I can not run the software cd because my new laptop doesnt have a cd drive. I did go to the canon site and upload the software thinking that may solve the issue, but when I get to step two of the installation and I connect the camera per directions it again can not find the device.

I can not seem to find a driver alone for a manual installation.

Any help or thoughts greatly appreciated!!!

The drivers needed are built into Windows, so no additional driver installation is required.  I would like to gather some additional information to help determine what is causing the issue.

1. Is the camera still recognized at all by other computers?
2. Is your laptop connection to AC power?
3. Are there any devices connected to your laptop other than the camera?
