One of the easiest methods of importing photos if connecting your camera via its USB cable isn't working, is to use a card reader. They are quite inexpensive.
Do you still have the charger that came with your camera? You'd use that to charge the battery. If you're missing the charger, you can order a replacement (CB-2LH) from Canon's Online Store.
