SX720HS after last recharging the battery the camera will no longer accept the battery. When inserting it asks if it is a canon battery, which it is as it's the battery that came with the camera, then follows up saying it's fake and switches off

Seven-year-old camera model. Batteries have a finite life. You get to decide if you want to spend a few bucks on a new battery to see if it fixes things. A Wasabi battery is $22.99 and is one of the good aftermarket brands. A Kastar is $15.99. Cheaper ones on eBay too.

Thanks for letting us know what Canon product you've got. The PowerShot SX720 HS is an older model which we have retired. While that means that Canon USA no longer offers direct support for it, your friends here in the Canon Community are welcome to offer suggestions!
You can also speak with a Canon Upgrade Program specialist to help you score a modern replacement that would meet your current needs at a discount. You can reach them weekdays and Saturdays at 1-866-443-8002.
Hope this helps!

Do you have another battery to try? If not, you would have to decide if it is worth it to buy another battery to try, or replace the camera.

There should be a thumbs down to respond non-validated answers. A seven year old camera should still accept OEM batteries, especially if the battery error occurs even after buying a new battery ($60), which I did in my case. The camera is a Powershot SX730HS. It's frustrating that Canon cannot provide better support for such a basic need.

"Non-validated answers"? What do you mean?
Sure, a seven-year-old camera should accept an OEM battery. If you want to spend that much to see if the camera is any good.
What support is Canon not providing here?
