PowerShot SX50 flash fires with burning odor when closed

Just today the flash on my wife's PowerShot SX50 started firing when she takes a photo while the flash is in the closed position. There is a distinct foul burning odor from the flash after each instance. Has anyone else experienced this and is there a setting to ensure that the flash doesn't fire when closed?
