When I got My Canon PowerShot SD800 IS I had WIndows XP. I got New computer Windows 7 Everything worked fine. I got Windows 10 Everything worked fine. I now have new WIndows 11 & NOTHING.
I used to be able to take the little card out & put it in the computer & download the pictures I took. Then it would delete all of the pictures from the card. I don't want to be on a cloud, or anything else. Just take a picture, send it to the grandkids. How do I cope with this? Me 'n' microsoft are not in the same ballpark. They are rich. I am not & cannot buy all their stuff Is there any fix for my wonderful litle camera? It has been such a blessing & makes my pictures look really great!
I get the card into the front of the computer, it fits loose & I have to tweak it to get it to connect. Then I can barely remove it because the thing goes so far in. Is this me? The Computer? The card?
Solved! Go to Solution.

Good point Steve. The remove devices feature is also available via the tray on the very bottom right of the display.
You will observe an inverted V shape on the left, CLICK on that to get the following expanded list of options. The one you want is circled in RED: just click on it to have it list the devices available for removal.

katshall,
Do you know how to get to the File Manager in Windows 11?
Whe you insert your card in the slot, and look at your File Manager, does your card show up?
It's possible that your computer is not reading your card. One possible option is to buy a card reader. Insert your card into the reader, and plug that into one of the USB ports on your computer. Just make the reader can read the kind of card you have.
Another option is to download the EOS Utility software from the Canon site. You'll need to be able to tell Canon what model of camera you have, and the operating system of your computer. As I sit here, I do not know if Canon has a version of EOS Utility compatible with your Powershot. You will have to contact Canon Support.
If you are able to use EOS Utility, you can connect your camera directly to the computer using USB cables. Does your Powershot have a USB port or a mini USB port?

Hi Steve. Sorry for the delay. I have gone a few more rounds with the Dell-Belle. I have had mixed results. The pictures I tried to download ARE on the computer. Have no idea about that. One time there was a symbol that appeared on the bottom bar where 'search & stuff' is. Not since. I took two other pictures & nothing appeared on the bottom bar. Is file Manager the same as File explorer?
I have had varying results on entering the card in the slot. No the card does not show up. But at least it "Feels" better & I'm working on getting it in & out. Canon told me my camera is too old & I can only deal with them online. So I don't know if that means they will tell me if they have something that would work with it. (I bet the camera isn't nearly as old as me. The Camera does have a USB port & I do have a cable for it that connects the mini port to the camera & the regular port to the front of the new Dell. I AM GOING TO TAKE A BREAK UNTIL mONDAY. tOO MANY OTHER IRONS IN THE FIRE THAT INVOLVE DOING STUFF FOR OTHERS ON THE WEEKEND. so i WILL GET BACK ON MY BROOMSTICK ON mONDAY. tHANK YOU FOR YOUR RESPONSE & HELPFULNESS. (OOPS HIT THE CAPS LOCK.) I do that a lot now that my paws are getting cranky. Somebody needs to build a keyboard with bigger keys & indelible letters! Mine keep disappearing/wearing off. Again, Mahalo Nui Loa!

katshall,
To follow up on Trevor's advice for for safely removing external devices like a USB thumb drive or an SD card on Windows 11,
In your task tray at the bottom of your screen, there is a little blue icon that looks like a window. If you hover over it with your mouse, it should say Start. That's your Start Menu.
Click on that and in the top right hand corner, You will see a little icon that says, "Settings". Click on that.
In the middle of your screen at the bottom, you will see something that says, "View All Devices". Click on that. You should see a list of all the devices that are connected to your computer.
Find your device, and across the screen over on the right-hand side, there will be three little horizontal dots. If you click on those dots, there will be an option that says, "Remove this device" If you click on that, your device will disappear, and you can safely remove it.
Start Menu>Settings>View All Devices>Remove this device

All that is in that box is Eject My Book 25ED Eject Brother PC - FAX 3.2 Eject Brother MFC - J497DW
The Brother stuff I spent 3 hours with the good folks as they walked me through installing the proper stuff for the laser & inkjet printers as neither would do squat. "Sigh" Think I should call COSTCO where I bought it? long drive there, & I doubt if they have anyone to deal with it. I'm getting grumpy. Time to go eat. Thanks again. & the LAST thing I sall do is go to pandora & listen to my Hawaiian music. Wilein the military & stationed there, I discovered that listening to Hawaiian music soothes the ruffled feathers of this ol' hen!

Let me ask a question for clarification please. As I understand it, the SD card reader is physically built into the body of the computer. When you put an SD card into the drive, can I confirm that the SD card appears in your File Manager list? This is usually found on the left-hand pane of File Manager, as per this shot from my own Windows 11 computer, when I put the SD card in, it came up with an assigned letter of Drive G: (the actual drive letter is irrelevant). What is important is that it appears as shown: with a title of EOS Digital (drive letter).

Hi and welcome to the forum:
The fastest and most reliable method is still to do what you have been doing: put the card into your computer and let file manager recognize it as a removeable drive. Windows 11 File Manager works in a way very similar to that of Windows 10, so I suspect from your description that your issue is more one of mechanics than software.
So, it seems like you have an issue with the card reader. If it is a new computer talk to the vendor and see if there is a fault, otherwise you can get a USB-connected SD card reader that should work fine. They are not expensive.

Hello Trevor, I'm back. Window may be part of my problem. .. I don't want Windows ONE or to use the cloud. I installed my old Office 7 on the new computer. It's what I know, can afford & am able to function with. I prefer to keep my junk on my own computer & external hard drive. "in house" Then it is there, until the computer dies. My windows 10 was a converted windows 7 & I was still keeping my stuff on my machine. So today the card was going into the front of the computer, & I heard the ding to let me know it recognized it. wandered around & found nothing & removed the card. It did a different dong to let me know the card was removed. So me & the gremlins in this desk top and I are aware of each other. I DID find two pictures I took that I could not find before. But the pictures are not being deleted from my card. I'll let that percolate until Monday as it's the weekend & there are too many other folks to deal with. My computer must wait. & I DO have a cable that will connect my camera to the computer. But will it acknowledge it? I was happiest when I had a program back on XP for pictures & such. I loved it - made me feel capable!
Blessings! Kat
I DO have a USB cord with a regular USB size receptacle on one end & a mini USB that fits into my Canon Camera! SO I shall mess around & see if I can get cooperation doing that. I may get into trouble with Windows 11 anyhow as I really do not want to be part of one drive or the cloud or any of that stuff. I just need to keep it simple so that I don't have to learn a lot of new stuff. My old brain is TIRED & changing the rules every year is not my idea of surviving. The older I get the more mistakes I make on the new stuff. The brain housing group is copping an attitude. "SIGH" & I DID find the pictures I tried to download. totally unexpected.

Hi Kat:
Personally I don't use cloud storage either, and I copy my files from my SD card to one of my hard drives for manipulation and storage.
If you place an SD card into the reader, normally the File Manager will display and show a new window with the SD card as a removable drive. If that does not happen, then simply open File Manager (or My computer if you prefer) and look for the drive.
From there you can go to the DCIM folder and select all files to copy them. There are some easy keyboard shortcuts if that helps.
When you get to the DCIM folder:
Press Ctrl+A to select all files
Press Ctrl+C to copy the files.
Then select the location in your file manager where you wish to place the files, once in that folder
Press Ctrl+V to paste the files.
Having checked that the files have been copied, it is recommended that you Eject the card - this is not new, but was introduced on Windows 10 because it is possible that some connections between the files and a program or process may still be open and just mechanically removing the SD card may cause a corruption of the card. To do that, the easiest method is to locate the icon for the SD card and Right+Click to generate a popup menu. From that menu select Eject.
If all is OK the drive icon will disappear after few seconds, if there is a connection you will get a warning to the effect that the drive is still in use. In that case close any programs that might access the drive.
Once the SD card is removed, place it back into the camera and use the camera's format command to format the card clean. That is preferable over deleting files in either the PC or camera, or formatting the card from the computer. With that done, you are ready to go for your next shoot.
I hope that helps. I understand it's a change from the interface you are used to, and there are lots of ways to make a Windows 11 look much more like an earlier version, but that is topic that is outside the context of this discussion.
