Hi savannah07,

Thanks for letting us know what Canon product you've got. The PowerShot SD400 is an older model which we have retired. While that means that Canon USA no longer offers direct support for it, your friends here in the Canon Community are welcome to offer suggestions!

You can also speak with a Canon Upgrade Program specialist to help you score a modern replacement that would meet your current needs at a discount. You can reach them weekdays and Saturdays at 1-866-443-8002.

Hope this helps!

Are you using a full size SD card or a micro SD with an adapter. If a micro with adapter, they can be troublesome in some cameras. Try another full size SD card if you have one at your disposal.

Your camera is old enough that it may not properly recognize the newer large capacity cards. Try a 16GB or smaller card if possible. If no improvement, try formatting the card in a desktop or laptop. COPY ANY FILES THAT YOU WANT TO KEEP FROM THE CARD FIRST! Formatting will completely erase the card. If this allows the camera to start up normally, format the card again in the camera. Also set the clock and calendar if they're not displaying the correct info.

Also the card locking switch in the camera may be faulty or sticking. But we can get into later if necessary.

Right. This 20-year-old camera likely can't utilize huge SD cards. 8-16 GB is a practical limit.

Using huge capacity cards is a bad idea anyway. An 8 GB. card will hold thousands of photos. You should not be keeping that much on a card. If a card dies, which as very possible, you lose it all.

Can the SD card be read and recorded-to when plugged into a computer? if it can, the card is good. The switch in one of the side rails of the card slot can be defective or stuck. See if it is stuck down.
