I have a Powershot sx710hs that I bought slightly used from Amazon a couple months ago, but I can’t figure out how to display the date on photos. I’ve looked through the menu for shooting and it doesn’t give me the option to display the date anywhere, how do I change this?

That is a feature available on very few cameras these days.
However, if you print the images from the camera, you can add the date to the printed image.

The battery question can be answered:
If the backup battery does not charge, it might be defective
I don't see any way to put the date/time on the image.
