My Canon SX40HS viewfinder goes black when turned on it's side (vertical). The lens cover is off, the shutter is open as the viewfinder is active when held straight on (horizontal), but when I turn the camera into a vertical position the screen goes black. I am still able to take a picture and view it when horizontal. I have changed batteries as well...any suggestions?

Remove your sunglasses. When you turn the camera vertical, your polarizing sunglasses react with the screen to darken it.

Thank you Steve M!
I've had this camera 4 years and just got my first pair of polarized...I had NO IDEA that was a factor...you are wonderful for taking the time to post such a simple/silly fix that I had no clue about.
Much apprciation!

Not a problem. I only knew because I did it myself! :))
