Hi Patty!
The key to adjusting many settings on your camera is the Control Dial that surrounds the FUNC SET button.
To directly control the shutter speed, put the mode dial in the "Tv" (Time Value) mode, also called "Shutter-Speed Priority". With the camera in this mode, turn the Control Dial to select a shutter speed. You'll see the shutter speed settings appear on the screen.
