Which takes better photos? A new powershot sx150is or an old 2008 powershot a470.

Even though the newer powershot has 2x the mps and 3x the zoom I'm most interested in the resolution of the photo. Any advice?

Given that the PowerShot SX150 IS has more zoom, higher resolutions and more options available, the PowerShot SX150 IS is probably the better choice over the PowerShot A470.  However, this does not mean that the images from the PowerShot A470 are not good quality images.
