imageCLASS MF663Cdw Laser Printer Goes Unresponsive

I bought a MF663Cdw color laser printer for Christmas.  The past two months of owning it, I have experienced an issue.  The laser printer goes into sleep mode and is quiet most of the time.  Randomly (could be a few days or just a few hours), it will make a noise like it is waking up to print.  When it does this, the noise last for 2 seconds and then the noise goes away.  Afterwards (about 95% of the time) the printer goes unresponsive.  Even the touch screen panel will not respond.  I am forced to push and hold the power button for 5 seconds (or unplug the printer) to turn it off.  Then, I turn the printer back on and everything is fine until the noise happens again at some random interval.

I updated the firmware twice since purchasing the printer hoping it would be fixed, but still nothing.  The last update was two days ago.  I can't seem to find anything on this issue as the printer is new and it doesn't appear to be happening to other similar models.  So, does anyone know what could be causing this issue?  The printer goes unresponsive and is disconnected from the Wi-Fi when it happens.  It never responds to anything except for the power button being pressed when in that "dead' state.

Greetings,

Can't say I've heard of a printer becoming completely unresponsive, and does not wake when (example) the home button is pressed.

Is there any possibility the AC outlet it's plugged in to has an issue?

Have you performed a factory reset?

If the printer doesn't wake when the 🌙 is lit and you press the Home 🏠 button, you need to contact support

The printer has a 3yr warranty.  Register the product in your MyCanon account and contact support.

Thanks for the response.  I've done a couple of factory resets.  I did one right after I upgraded the last firmware update and it appears to be working better.  I still get the startup/power cycle sound every few days, but it has responded when I went to check each time.  The sleep button is lit when the issue does happen, but the screen and home button don't respond and there is no Wi-Fi connection.

Good idea though about trying a different power outlet.  I might also try the ethernet port to see if Wi-Fi is the issue (the sound could be a networking reset attempt).  If neither option works, then I will contact Canon support.  Thanks!

I bought the MF663CDW about two months ago and have exactly the same issues - printer doesn't wake up from sleep when sent a print job and it is unresponsive to the display and the buttons on on the panel. Only way to recover is re-power the printer which is totally unacceptable. I managed to upgrade the firmware (02/2026 version) and this did not change this behavior. Using wifi connection with a reserved ip address in the router.

I am having the exact same issue! Mine started after the last firmware update and is constantly clicking and turning on and off.

I just brought this two weeks ago Feb 2026 and having the same issue. The display panel is lite but does not respond to pressing the buttons, I must turn off and on. I have reset the sleep mode to only be on overnight 10 pm to 7 am this has helped some but this should not be an issue.

So based on the latest replies, it appears to be either a device firmware/software issue or Canon has put a specific POS part in this unit.  Hopefully a future firmware update will fix this.  I've had 2 updates since November and neither fixed the problem.

I did contact Canon about this issue two weeks ago and the rep basically told me to return the printer (too late) or they would have to give me a refurbished one.  After seeing these replies, I am going to hold out on a fix hopefully as my printer works great except for this random sleep issue.

Right now I have gone 3 days without the incident happening, but it can happen within an hour of a reset sometimes.  The issue is just so random, but it only happens when on sleep mode.  I say everyone needs to let Canon know about their issue and see if they finally pay attention and fix it.

Greetings,

Hearing about these types of issues is always unfortunate.  @dacripe, this is your thread.

I don't know that waiting is ideal.  Although you're out of your return period for the retailer, your printer does have a 3-year warranty and Canon will replace your device.  It's good that you have reported the issue and have record.

Both of my lasers get firmware updates periodically and both are responsive.  I have not had to reset either since purchase.  Laser printers do wake briefly to clean themselves.  Both of my units do this.  Sometimes it happens once a day, other times a week or more goes by. It seems to be related to usage.

Both of my printers are connected wirelessly.  Both have their IP's reserved on the router, 2 different networks.

Since the system wake (unresponsive to button press) issue is not normal, definitely stay on top of it and consider getting your unit replaced.
