Thanks for joining the conversation, Jsteiner!  This part is referred to as the legal dust cover.  The printer's paper drawer can be extended to fit legal size paper (8½" x 14") but that makes it stick out of the printer.  You can use this extra part to cover the open paper drawer to keep out dust and other debris.

You'll find this information on page 79 of your printer's manual.
