Printing with USB

Nadavidson

I recently purchased a Canon Color ImageClass MF642Cdw. I have downloaded the drivers to my Mac. I do not have Wifi or internet as we use a hotspot from our phone. I want to print via connecting through a USB. I connect through the USB and nothing happens, I cant print anything and am at a loss for what to do.

Greetings,

Mac > running which OS and build?

How is the printer connected, directly to a USB port, are you using any type of hub or adapter?

What software installer did you use?

It's a MacBook Pro version 10.15.7. I have an adapter for the USB to my Mac.  I downloaded the following:

I hope thats the right information you wanted.

Greetings,

You are using the correct drivers for Catalina.

If you followed the install instructions and installed the drivers, waiting to be prompted to connect the printer, then it's the adapter you've chosen.

Try something like this.  Its probably a safe bet.

Hello Nadavidson,

You can check if the adapter that you have will work for the printer by checking in printers and scanners. In printers and scanners, you can click the + at the bottom of the list to see if the printer appears in the add printer window. If the printer does not appear in the add printer list while the printer is connected and turned on, it will mean the adapter is not working. The printer connection should appear in the list even if the drivers are not installed.

Here is a resolution for something similar on a Windows machine.  Perhaps it will work on the Mac platform.

The Canon software and drivers for the ImageClass MF644Cdw, cannot differentiate when you are using USB or Wi-fi.  Even when you select one or the other during installation of the software/drivers, the software will drop BOTH USB and Wi-fi drivers on your Windows machine. When the printer has Wi-fi turned on and the Windows machine is connect to the printer via USB, then Windows cannot figure out which to use and then you will get Driver Contention which causes the Communication error/Connection issue. Simply put, you cannot have both Wi-fi turned on in the printer AND have the printer installed on a workstation via USB.  Remote computers on your network will print / scan fine but the USB attached computer is going to have all of the issues. Here is what I discovered - that has fixed the issue for me.

  1. COMPLETELY DELETE all of the Canon software. Everything. Then reboot the Windows machine.
  2. Unplug the USB cable, you will not be using it again.
  3. Make sure you have the latest .NET Framework installed.
  4. Install the Canon Software and Drivers.  When prompted, DO NOT select USB installation.
  5. Install the Toner Status software.
  6. Finally, install the Canon MF Scan Utility - last.
  7. Reboot.
