Just had to replace a cartridge for the 1st time in my MF455dw and the print is locked, as it is not an original Canon cartridge. Is this typical? I've found numerous compatible cartridges on line for about half the price of the Canon original. If Canon locks the print due to "counterfeit cartridge", which is the error message I get, why are there compatible cartridges even being sold? Is there a workaround?

Hello Tommyd1,
Our Canon genuine toner cartridges have chips on them that help the printer detect that the correct type of toner cartridge is loaded. The chip lets the printer perform maintenance options and image correction as well. Some third-party toner cartridges are properly detected but can cause print quality issues or prevent you from performing certain maintenance options.
Using third party toner cartridges is not something we recommend since we do not have the specifications for the cartridges and can't guarantee their performance.

Still seems suspect to simply lock the machine. Good reason to buy a different brand. Canon cartridge $145. Other cartridges $60~
