Hello Leebo.
In order to help, we'll need more information.
Which version of Mac OS is running on the computer?
Is the Mac computer a Macbook or other laptop?
When the printer isn't responding by USB, check the USB device list (Apple menu > About this Mac > More Info > System Report > Hardware > USB). Does the "Canon MF230 series" show up in the USB list when it doesn't respond?

It is a Macbook Pro running High Sierra. It works perfectly with Brother HL-L2380W, HP LaserJet P1102W, HP Office JetPro 9010 and did also with my Canon MX700. That just died and I was very sad. It was my work horse and I had managed to keep it going despite updates on Apple software.

It shows that my computer is hooked up to the printer, but it doesn't print unless I shut the printer down and restart it. The screen will shoiw the information to copy, but not print.
