Knocked my MF4890dw off my desk

It hit the concrete floor but seemed to be mostly in good shape.  The outside casing had come unseated, the paper tray pin broke and the autofeeder sensor arm broke.  Otherwise it looked ok.  I was able to fit the case back into place after removing a screw, and bought and installed a replacement paper tray and feeder sensor arm.

After trying to scan, the feeder now works only when i select Feeder (Auto mode goes straight to the glass no matter what), and it does not seem to work straight away. When i start a scanning session and select Feeder, I put the paper in and the printer gives a little beep. I hit Start and I get the following error message: "Could not scan because the originals are not placed in the feeder or an error ocurred. Check the scanner status and then try to scan again." However, if I run a scan on the the glass, even incomplete, I can then run a feeder scan no problem.

Any thoughts on whether it's an easily repairable issue or something i need to take the printer in to an actual service technician?

Thanks!

Greetings,

I'm really sorry this happened.  The printer weighs 39lbs... so I'm at a loss how this might happen.

The printer is almost 12 yrs old.  Only you can decide if service is a good value.  I'd probably recycle it, but you can always take it for repair and see what they say.  Trying to ship it somewhere will be cost prohibative. You'll need a local repair shop to keep the overall cost of repair (if fixable) down.

Thanks for the reply and the advice! Yeah, it was on a desk that wasn't fully supported and I put my weight in the wrong place so it tipped. I saved the monitor from falling, but not the printer.

Hello bbfriedman,

In this situation, it does look like the printer needs service. We currently do not have any authorized service facilities that still work on that model. Outside of the 1 year warranty, you can contact our sales department at 1-800-385-2155 to use our Upgrade Program. The Upgrade program will give you a discount and free shipping on a replacement printer.

Thank you Hector, I will definitely check out the upgrade program.
