I have configured the printer via Remote UI with the following settings:
SMTP Server: smtp.gmail.com
E-Mail Address: printer.user@company.com
Use SMTP Authentication (SMTP AUTH): ON
User Name: printer.user@company.com
Password: password_here
SMTP TX port changed to 587 (didn't work on default port 25 neither).
When I run a "Check SMTP Connection" test via Remote UI, I get a "Connection to the server was successful." message. However, when trying to scan and send to one of the addresses saved in the address book, I get the #806 error.
The printer has it's dedicated IP on our wireless network. Regular printing works well.

Solution: enabling "Use TLS for SMTP TX" solved it.
