If someone gave you a CD with images you need to download, you will need to run out and buy an external DVD burner.

If you are trying to install Canon software, all Canon software for your camera (e.g. the contents of the "Canon EOS Digital Solutions Disk" is all downloadable from the Canon support website.

If someone is attempting to share images with you on optical media such as a CD or DVD.  Use of optical media isn't very common anymore.  If someone wanted to share pictures with you using physical medai they would probably hand you a USB memory stick.  But possibly these are older images (from the days when the use of optical disks was more common) and you don't want to lose your old images.

If the images are on an optical disk and you have no other choice of media type, then there are two options...

1)  If you own more than one computer, Apple has the ability to "share" the optical drive of another computer.  It can be another Apple computer with an optical drive -or- it can even be a Windows computer with an optical drive (they have a downloadable utility for Windows that will allow the Mac to use it's optical drive remotely.)  When you use a shared optical drive it will show up on your Mac "as if" the CD/DVD were inserted in a local optical drive.  See:  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203973

2)  Apple sells a usb-attached optical drive.  Check Apple's website for a producted called "Apple USB SuperDrive".  

Apple dropped the built-in drive because people just don't use them anymore.  But they offer it as an external USB drive "just in case" you need one.  I suspect it wont be long before they no longer bother to manufacture the external super-drive.
