how can i get the model number to my printer to download drivers when only knowing the serial number

If you have the printer nearby, your printer's model number will be clearly stated either on the top or front of the unit.  This usually consists of a set of letters (such as MP, MG, MX, PRO, iP, MB, or MF) followed by up to 4 numerals.  This letter/number combination will be your printer's model number, and you can use it to search for drivers at http://usa.canon.com

The O/S should recognize the printer model even without drivers.
