Canoscan 8800F scanner very temperamental

As there's no separate forum for scanners so I'm posting my question here.

My Canoscan 8800f is terrifically temperamental. I have Mac OS10.8.5, and use Image Capture to scan. But very often IC doesn't show a scan option, only Hide Details, Overview, and Cancel and under Format only shows TIFF, PNG and PDF, no JPG. Sometimes it's okay, often not. What is wrong? Maybe there's better software than Image Capture for scanning.

ImageCapture is the proprietary Apple scanning software, Canon does have it's own that can be downloaded from their website. You'll want to install the 8800F Scanner Driver, MP Navigator EX 1.0 Opener and MP Navigator EX Ver 1.0.8
