RF24 1.4 VCM or RF35 1.4 VCM

Hello,
I have a RF24-70 2.8 and a RF50mm 1.2 ( 95% on my camera) but I need a lens to go with the 50.

I work in video and photography, I do a lot of different types of work, weddings, commercials, events, etc. Although the 24-70 is incredible, I've always liked fixed lenses with large apertures to achieve a more cinematic and artistic look, and in fact I think I'm more creative with a fixed focal length, because I have to frame more carefully.

That said, would you buy the 24 or the 35? Ideally, I'd like to have both 😄

If you are currently shooting video with the 24-70mm, then you'll know if you predominately use it at the 24mm zoom position, and if so then the 24mm would be the lens to go for. Alternatively set up your camera and zoom the 24-70mm to the 35mm position and see if that suits your framing style.

Rental is a good way to evaluate too.

I would first analyze all photos taken with the 24-70. Were images taken mostly at 24? At 35? Or, over the entire range?

Wider angle lenses have deeper depths of field, so use a DOF calculator to see what you'd get with an f/1.4 vs f/2.8 at 24mm. It may not be as dramatic as you're hoping.

But, the 2 stop gain in light gathering as well as very limited focus breathing could be very nice for video work.

Side note: While I love wide-aperture primes (I exclusively use them), I'm not a fan of the VCM lenses due to the warning regarding pacemakers. I don't have one, but family members do.

Having done countless weddings personally I would not buy either one. However since you are going to simply repeat the FL you already have set your 24-70mm to 24mm and tape it there with a piece of gaffers tape and use it. Do the same at 35mm. Which do you prefer? One thing that a wedding photographer doesn't need is switching lenses a lot. That's why the 24-70mm zoom is king. BTW, it also has 50mm included.

IMHO, a better lens choice would be getting a 70-200mm f2.8L.
