EOS Rebel T3i viable as a backup for an amateur?

Hi y’all. I primarily use a Canon R50. I want a separate camera as a backup and a friend offered me a really great condition T3i with a couple lenses. Are they still a viable camera for an amateur? Looks like they’ve been around a while now. Also giving me a couple EF-S lenses and a battery grip, and an Arsenal 1 camera assistant.
Thanks, Chris

Hey @kg4kpg, welcome to the community.

The easy answer is to go out and grab some frames with the body and each of the lenses. If the result is favorable then it is absolutely a viable backup system.

kg4kpg,

I think the T3i would make a fine backup camera.

I've seen some sample images taken with a T3i and I went, "Holy Cow. That's a nice picture."

A T3i in good shape will work as well as it ever did and a lot of photographs were taken with them.  If what you need is within its capabilities, then it is a good backup camera for you and depending upon what you do having two bodies with very different focal length lenses immediately available is a huge convenience.

The first serious digital camera I bought was a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and I still have it for sentimental reasons and it works perfectly.  I could shoot a soccer match with it in daylight and images that don't require serious cropping will look as good as the images from my 1DX III photos to players and fans.

I keep a pair of 1DX II bodies as backups to my 1DX III bodies even though I have never had a 1 series fail at an event but it is ALWAYS good to have a backup camera and lens!

Me either and I probably have shot more with mine than most people except other 'pros' that make a living with their camera. And it is about 15 years old now. I will say my previous 1 Series didn't get as much use since I upgraded soon after each came out until I finally retired (the second or third time) with the 1DX. The grandson is still shooting my old 1D Mk IIn, too.
