WARNING: EOS Web Utility Pro (macOS) not worth paying for in its present state

Just wanted to drop a note for anyone thinking of paying for a subscription: DON'T.

I have struggled with basic functionality for nearly a year now. I've seen on these forums that others have the same issues, too.

If I had to guess, new versions come out maybe quarterly. Significant issues mentioned by others on these forums affecting basic operation — not even advanced features, we're talking table stakes for streaming software here — have gone completely unfixed for a shockingly long time.

After an update sometime last year, my webcam stream began to freeze for a few seconds at a time. This happens like clockwork every five minutes or so.

Another basic problem that appeared after an update is that the software usually fails to connect to my camera via usb. I have to stop what I'm doing well in advance of a meeting to unplug/replug the usb cable and/or the camera power to try to get it to connect in time for my meeting.

I also realized recently that the the background service installed for this software was a drain on my Macbook's battery. Even when the Web Utility Pro app isn't running, I noticed that its background service has a surprisingly high number of idle wake-ups in Activity Monitor. This prevents the cpu from being able to spend time in lower power states, causing the battery to drain faster. Going into preferences to stop the background service when I wasn't working made a noticeable difference in how warm my Macbook felt on my lap as well as in how long it lasted on a charge.

I recently got an email notifying me of my upcoming subscription renewal. That was my wake-up call. I realized that this is still very much BETA software and I'm tired of putting up with its foibles. If Canon was serious about providing a polished tool for professional use, it certainly has the resources to make that happen. In its current form, this software does not deserve to have the word 'Pro' in its name.

I've moved on and invested in an Elgato Cam Link 4k. Now that I have a working setup, I cancelled my subscription tonight and couldn't be happier. If you're also unhappy with this software, you may want to consider giving it the heave-ho, too. If you were thinking about subscribing, take it from me, you're better off looking elsewhere.
