is there any way of powering through pc usb to see if its the battery or charger broken, or any other ideas to get it going again.

A simple way to see if your battery is ok is to use a multi metre to check the voltage on the unit.  However at a simpler level if the charger is working it should still show the correct lights when the batter is connected to it.  You could take it to a local camera store and get them to check your battery.  They might even check  your camera by putting a battery of their own in it.

What was happending when the camera stopped working?  Were you doing anything specific or unusual. Did any kind of event occur close to that time?

If it is not the battery then best log a job with Canon Service I would think.

2 things I would try is a new SD card and/or a new battery, yours may have lost its capacity to hold a charge sufficient enough to "boot up" your camera.

Wasn't doing anything unusual. Have tried a new card. Will get hold of a battery next time ime off and try that.

This won't work or tell you anything.  A battery has to have a load on it for testing. A new battery, a new charger and SD card is in order if you want to spend the cash on'em. I'd try a local camera shop or Best Buy.  They will probably be willing to help you especially if they think it will mean a sale.
