Upgrade R50 to ??

ashbaughmj
Apprentice

Hello everyone,

I recently received a Canon Eos R50 for Christmas last year. Absolutely love it! The camera does amazing work! I am interested in wanting to purchase another Canon Camera. I am not interested in video at all. I can probably splurge a bit on the price. Without breaking the bank though, what are possible options in purchasing another camera? Maybe a cheaper option and a more expensive option perhaps? I can compare the two. I am still learning so much; I would title myself as an amateur for sure.
I have read so many Canon Manual products. I am getting overwhelmed and unsure what is best.
Thank you for your support!

I am really into wildlife, landscape, and portrait photography.

If you are just starting with the R series my recommendation would be to put your money first into some lenses that address your photo interests rather than getting additional camera bodies. The R50 is capable of being used for the wide range of subjects you are interested in. Develop your skills with that camera and you will learn where it's possible shortcomings are. That will help as you consider a different body in the future.

Hey ashbaughmj, welcome to the site!

There is a bit to unpack when you ask for recommendations for a camera body, the biggest, what are you photographing?

The reason I ask is that if you are shooting frequently in low light I would probably recommend the R6 Mk II. If you are shooting portraiture and especially if you are going to print you may want to look at the larger MP cameras like the R5 or R5 MK II . And if you shoot sports you may want to go with the R3.

Also as jrhoffman75 suggested lenses, are you currently happy with the lenses in you stable? If your not and the R50 is producing maybe a new lens or two would help you achieve your goals.

ashbaughmj,

At this stage, I don't think I would advise downsizing to like an R100. I think you would be disappointed.

One approach you might take is to consider what you like to photograph. If you like to take pictures of things more "zoomed in" or "magnified" or "in isolation", you might look at the line of crop sensor cameras like the R10 or R7.

If you like to take pictures of things in their environment with a larger or more expansive field of view, you might look at the line of full frame cameras like the R5 or R6 or R8.

As mu esteemed colleagues have suggested though, since you are relatively new to this, you might invest your money in some new lenses before you get a new body. As someone once said, "Your first 10,000 photos are your worst."

Hi ashbaughmj, welcome to the group!

Your budget comment is really open ended.  What is one person's definition of splurging and not breaking the bank is going to be totally different from the next, depending on how much disposable income any of us has.  I might have $2,000 to splurge this month, my friend might have $5,000.  Having a more realistic budget amount you can share will really help us point you in the right direction.  There are so many great options, but a wide variety of prices.

This is a very friendly and helpful group, and we can give you some great suggestions.  Let us know what you would realistically like to spend, as well as what my colleagues have asked on what you shoot.  Also, what do you already own for lenses?

In-body Image Stabilization in your next body would be a significant upgrade. Below are bodies that are in stock on the Canon website.

I own the R5 and R6 Mk II and often grab the R6 for outdoor hikes and indoor low light sports. @ it's current pricepoint if you could swing it I don't believe you would be disappointed. Be advised though it has 24 MP with the R5 being @ 45 MP

It "might" be an upgrade, but might not.  We still don't know what she shoots.  For example with what I shoot (hired sports, night skies, infrared) the shots are either too fast to need the stabilization (1/500 or faster), or on a tripod to where it has to be turned off.  Mine is always off on my R6 Mk ll.

Um.... I do know what the OP shoots.

Just spit ballin here but OP stated:

  • I am not interested in video at all.
  • I am still learning so much; I would title myself as an amateur for sure.
  • I am really into wildlife, landscape, and portrait photography.

So taking into consideration she is into wildlife, landscape, and portrait photography, still learning. All that being said when shooting landscapes in the wind or hand held portraits at the lower shutter speeds IBIS will be benefit  I will stick to my belief that In-body Image Stabilization would be a significant upgrade and assist her in improving image IQ and her learning curve.

"Um.... I do know what the OP shoots."

I'm at the point in life where I started wearing reading glasses not too long ago.  There are plenty of days where I tell myself "I'm fine without them".  Such as the day I read the OP's original post, and totally missed that last line.  My apologies, Marc!  I totally missed that.  I'll be a good boy and wear my glasses when I'm on the computer.  lol

Reading that, I couldn't agree with you more on the IS.

I know what you are taking about, I have glasses all over the house and in my truck just to make sure I can see.

That being said, you seem to always be a "good boy" helping people out on the forum!
