Tips for Photographing the Moon

Anonymous

As a relative beginner with an EOS90D with 18-135 nano USM lens,  I'm getting excited about a 'Harvest Moon' tonight. Here in the UK we have a clear blue sky and I live in the hilly Pennines, so should be ideal for some great photos.

So please let me have some tips for set up etc - I have a tripod and don't mind getting up early tomorrow if needed.

Thanks

That looks a serious piece of equipment. I know Birmingham has a good manufacturing base, but I don't recall Eddystone. Fort Dunlop was an impressive building in its heyday. But we're in an interesting transition period at the moment.

Best wishes

That is our telescope- we're particularly unskilled in its use. So if you recognise the brand Sky Watcher and think we can connect a camera I'd be very happy

You have a reflector telescope. A reflector telescope like yours can be used to photograph the moon, but they are not the best and not the easiest. A schmit-cassegrain telescope will yield better results

Thanks EB - we haven’t had much joy to date, but will give it a go.

That's the spirit. I love it 😁 Your tele will work just not the easiest. Please show us some shots.

BTW, a couple things. The physical size of a reflector tele can be deceiving as to what the actual FL is. It may be well shorter than it appears. A lot depends on the eyepiece used. Secondly remember it is always daylight on the Moon it is only night time where you are.

Not a great photo of the moon because the low light required wide open aperture with shallow depth of field, but it was a fun opportunity to include the moon in this point after attempt during Friday night football this weekend.  You don't see a football sailing over the moon that often:)

Great photo- thanks for everyone's contributions. Sitting on my hands till Black Friday. In the meantime, playing Tom Waits 'I'll Shoot the Moon Right out of the Sky' !!

Nice!

Thanks, I had to do something to have fun since the team has figured out how to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory with under 1 minute remaining 2 weeks in a row 😞
