This is just ridiculous. - EOS 5D Mark II repair issue

I have been a professional photographer for almost 40 years and relied solely on Canon products. Even endorsed them from the stage when speaking to forums. But today I will no longer ever purchase or endorse a Canon product. I have an EOS 5D Mark II that needs minor repair (it got jostled) and I am handing it down to to the person who is purchasing my business as I retire. Canon now REFUSES to make this minor repair for me and wants me to BUY A NEW ONE. That bulls**t. 

I'm going to tell everyone that I come in contact with - including my new buyers - not to get involved with Canon if they are selling products they refuse to service.

How utterly disappointing to end a 40-year career on this note. No thanks to Canon. So very disappointed.

It's quite normal for a company to stop supporting older products some years after the product stops being sold. Your EOS 5D Mark II was replaced by the EOS 5D Mark III in spring 2012, and at that point your camera enters the end of life program. During the next 7 years Canon keeps service parts to repair the superseded products taking it to spring 2019, which was five years ago.

None of this will change your viewpoint, but it's the reality that things become impossible to service without a supply of replacement parts.

No, it doesn't change my viewpoint. Especially since no parts are needed. Fix what you sell. If you can't fix it, or recommend someone who can - don't sell it. Why buy something that they claim you will use as a tool in your business for years only to have it crap out and then they just want to sell you another? 

I would totally understand if new parts were needed, but the repair wouldn't involve new parts. A simple reassembly. And there was no help in finding another repair venue - just wanted to shove a different product down my throat. Seriously? That's first stage, get-it-off-my-desk thinking. 

No, you didn't change my viewpoint. Only cemented it further.

You're disappointed. I get it. But I ask that you please understand where our team is coming from. While you may not believe any parts are necessary, if they receive your gear, and they cannot return your camera to full factory specs, then it's on us. It's our responsibility to ensure everything leaves our factory service center in full working condition because we back every repair with a warranty. That's why our team isn't allowed to touch a product we no longer have parts for. 

You don't know if any parts could've been damaged in the fall. It may look minor but that's only the tip of the iceberg.

You're upset because Canon can't repair your 16 yr old camera?  

Respectfully.  Try taking a 16 yr old phone, computer, printer, etc to Apple, Microsoft, Google, Sharp, Epson, etc and see what they say about repairing a device that old.  

Hardware cannot be supported in perpetuity.  Please be reasonable and adjust your expectations accordingly.

Yeah, I get it. Not so much the "can't repair" but the attitude they take.

I see you are coming around (even if you do not want to admit it) 😊

Looks like a parking lot fender bender, then the body shop says oh look the bumper support is crumpled and has to be replaced.  But wait, "it didn't look that bad".  It probably didn't, but Canon and others can't risk not being able to repair a product.  Age is a factor.  My brother has a favorite pair of glasses.  The temple arm was no match for his toddler.  The frame isn't being made anymore...  So new glasses time.  

It's kind of you to want to pass along your trusty 5D2, but sadly it's reached its end.  So, enjoy retirement, travel and hopefully do it with a newer camera.  Keep capturing memories and stick what you know is good...  Canon. 😍
