The shutter stays open at that point, keeping me from taking a photograph. When I turn the 5Ds off, the shutter closes. Any suggestions?

Do you have the movie mode switch in the movie position, instead of the photo position?

Sounds like it is stuck in LiveView.

Shutter automatically opens when I turn my 5Ds on.
