Settings for Canon EOS 850D Rebel T8i DSLR beauty videos

Hello,

I have the Rebel T8i, and I’ve just upgraded my lighting and I feel like my camera still isn’t picking up the lighting. I’m getting into beauty videos for YouTube. Can anyone recommend settings I should try that’ll help?

Are you using continuous lights? What lens are you using and what are your typical camera settings?

By "not picking up the lighting" do you mean your footage ends up being dark?

For video, you typically set the shutter speed based upon the frame rate (180º rule). e.g. if you're capturing 30 fps, set the shutter to 1/60 second.  You'd then need to set aperture and ISO, either automatically (e.g. by using shutter priority mode), or manually.

Depending upon the amount of light you can add to the scene, and what aperature you have the lens at, you may need to increase the ISO. With enough light, even if using a narrower aperture (e.g. f/5.6), you should be able to use lower ISOs to keep noise low.

With the T8i, if you use one of the Creative Modes of AV, TV, or P, the camera will default to the P mode and choose your aperture, shutter speed and ISO to give you what the camera determines to be a proper exposure.

If you choose one of those Modes, and your camera is not "picking up the lighting", you'll have to increase the lighting. If you choose M, or Manual Mode, you could try increasing your ISO, or widening the aperture. I don't know what kind of lens you are using, but if you go too low, like f/2.8 or so, you risk not having much in focus.

One thing you could try is to put your camera in Av mode, and if you think the video is too dark, then increase your exposure compensation by one or two clicks. See if that helps.
